DEGREE APPLICATIONS & FUNDING
2002
If you are interested in starting a degree programme
in the forthcoming academic year, commencing September 2002, NOW
is the time to register your interest and make an application.
Applicants will be sent details of any funding that they may be
eligible for from the Department of Education.
The DOE will fund the course fees for eligible
students taking the undergraduate Business Studies degree on a
full or part-time basis. In addition, full-time undergraduates
may also be eligible to receive a student grant. Postgraduate

STUDENT BURSARIES & SCHOLARSHIPS
Students who apply to the IBS may also be eligible
to apply for IBS student bursaries and scholarships. The small
but growing number of funds available are donated by organisations
and individuals who wish to offer financial support to students
by, for example, paying course fees for an international student
from a particular country or setting up travel scholarships for
students to attend conferences. The IBS would welcome further
offers of support that would benefit students.

CHANNEL ISLANDS VISIT
In February the IBS attended Higher Education
Conventions in Jersey and Guernsey to talk to students and careers
teachers. The idea of studying in the similar offshore environment
of the Isle of Man particularly appeals to students with an interest
in a career in finance. The business studies degree incorporates
a work placement year and the IBS aims to develop links with organisations
that can provide opportunities for students - both on the Isle
of Man and in the Channel Islands.

LEARNING RESOURCES
The recently appointed Learning Resources Manager,
Paul Weatherall, has made rapid progress developing the IT and
library facilities available for staff and students. There are
intranet links from the student's IT facility, the Manx Telecom
Learning Resource Centre, to the vast resources available on-line
in our academic partners' libraries as well as access to academic
journals and specialist business information.
These facilities are also an important resource
for "IOM plc" therefore individuals and organisations
that would like to have access for education, reference and research
purposes are invited to join as external members. Membership includes
access to the 'hard copy' reference and lending book library -
this facility will move from its temporary base to its new location
in March.

DUBAI VISIT
Prospective students in Dubai, were able to meet
representatives from the IBS at the Isle of Man Government 'Road
Show' to the United Arab Emirates in October. There is a large
expat community in Dubai, many with Manx connections, and people
were interested to find out more about specialist offshore Higher
Education. The IBS aims to develop links with international financial
services organisations in Dubai and to recruit full-time students
for the Business Studies degree and the Masters in International
Banking & Finance.

The results of research commissioned by Isle of
Man Newspapers were presented recently by IBS Research Fellow,
Dr Christina O'Loughlin. The research into media usage and recreational
patterns of local residents was designed to enable Isle of Man
Newspapers to identify the specific needs of both its advertisers
and audience.

IBS HOME AT THE NUNNERY SECURE
Staff and students at the IBS are pleased that
the purchase of our home at The Nunnery is now complete and we
can look to the future from a secure base.
The purchase of The Nunnery by the IBS, which
was funded by a loan guaranteed by the Isle of Man Government,
sparked a lively political debate, the outcome of which was a
majority decision that Tynwald Members concur with the purchase.
Defending the IBS project, Chief Minister, Richard Corkill, said
"What the International Business School needs is the goodwill
and support of the Island and its authorities and the opportunity
to prove itself as an academic institution."
Built in 1823, The Nunnery is one of the Island's
finest buildings and we think it is the ideal location for a Higher
Education institution. Surrounded by parkland, close to the financial
district, it is a prestigious building that mirrors the IBS values
of quality and excellence.
Organisations from the public and private sector
are also welcome to utilise the building and grounds for small
to medium sized events such as business meetings, in-house training
and presentations.
We also want other groups in the community to
benefit from our acquisition by hosting cultural events. An outdoor
production by the Isle of Man Art Society is in the planning stages.

SPONSORSHIP
As well as sponsorship for facilities, we want
to bring world-renowned figures to the Island; to carry out research
and publish the results; to develop a truly cosmopolitan student
body by offering scholarships and bursaries.
Sponsors can contribute to the development of
a forward looking and innovative institution, which will help
to place the Isle of Man at the forefront of offshore business
education. Further research proposals are welcomed, particularly
in the areas of offshore finance, banking, regulation and compliance.
