Progress on The Nunnery
We are very pleased to be able to tell you that
work has actually begun on the conversion of the Nunnery for International
Business School use.
Our contractors are Jarvis (Auldyn) and the Contract
Managers are Dalrymple and Associates, both of whom are as anxious
as we are that work should progress quickly and smoothly. The
contract time is 12 weeks but we are working towards a phased
entry, thereby allowing us to to access and use some of the rooms
before the whole project is complete. In drawing up our internal
changes we have had to take great care to ensure that the fabric
of this historic building is not irrevocably damaged in any way.
A visit to The Nunnery before work began by the
Victorian Society enabled us to learn much of the history of the
building which we shall hope to encapsulate in number of display
panels in the International Business School for the benefit of
visitors, staff and students alike.

Board of Governors
In the last News letter we promised to tell you
more about our Governors. The Board of Governors have responsibilities
delegated to them by the Directors of the Company. (The Isle of
Man International Business School is a company limited by guarantee
which has charitable status.)
The main responsibilities of the Governors
are:
- the day-to-day governance of the Business School
- to ensure that it is effectively managed
- to produce a rolling five year plan
- to monitor the performance of the School
As the lBS was established on a tripartite basis
as a partnership between the Isle of Man Government, the Isle
of Man business community and the University of Liverpool the
composition of the Governing body includes members drawn from
each of these "constituencies". We are very fortunate
in having a very distinguished set of Governors, all of whom give
their time voluntarily.
The Governors are chaired by Ralph Thomas, a long
time campaigner for the establishment of the International Business
School.
The Chairman is supported by:
- Chris Hall from Manx Telecom
- Gary Drinkwater from HSBC
- Ray Smith, Principal of the IOM College
- Dr Fenella Bazin from the Centre for Manx studies
- Penny Creighton, Coordinating Advisor for Further Education,
Department of Education
- Colin Youde, Head of Business Faculty at the IOM College
- Professors Batey, Ritchie and Taylor from the University
of Liverpool
- Prof Hugh Davidson of Cranfleld University
The Isle of Man Government who give very full
support to our endeavours and by whom we are financially supported
in this start-up phase, are represented by:
- Ralph Cowin, the Director of Education
- David Cannan, Speaker of the House of Keys
Even though the inaugural meeting of the Governors
on 26th January was largely concerned with essential formalities,
it was very apparent that the Governors represent a pool of talent
and enthusiasm of which we should be very proud and which will
serve the lBS well.
The Board of Governors also has a number of Committees
on which we hope that much of the hard work will be done in debating
ideas and generating new proposals. It is planned that all of
these committees, with the exception of the Academic Board - that
will have to await the arrival of both academic staff and students
- will meet before the next formal meeting of the Governors on
10th May.

Course and Programmes
The first programme to use the International Business
School will be the Government's "Magic" IT training
scheme. The scheme is contracted to the Isle of Man College but
they will use accommodation at the lBS for at least 12 months.
The programme means that over the next I 2 months
or so up to 2500 Government employees will have the opportunity
to attend training at the lBS.
In the autumn of this year a number of courses
will transfer to the International Business School from the Isle
of Man College. These will include:
- The MBA programme
- Diploma in Administrative Studies
- CIB Dip. in Financial Services Management
- BSc in Financial Services Associateship (ACIB)
- ACCA Professional Level
- ICSA Professional Level
- ICSA Post Qualifying Diploma
- Other courses are under negotiation.
In 2001 we plan to offer full time courses at
undergraduate level in Tourism and Hospitality Management and
in International. Business and Finance, as well as the MBA in
full time mode. The degree programmes are all subject to approval
by the University of Liverpool.
We shall also be offering a variety of short programmes
and "in house" programmes for company training and development.

Sponsorship
Although our Government funding is adequate to
enable us to open our doors and begin to function, if we are to
move to the cutting edge and attain our goal of becoming the Centre
of Excellence for offshore activity then it is essential that
we receive tangible support from the business community. To that
end we have developed a brochure outlining a wide range of activities
that can be sponsored, covering an equally wide range of budgets.
If you would like a copy of this brochure please
contact the Director, Prof Roger Carey, on 01624 685829 or email
r.carey©doe.gov.im
This brochure lays out the ways in which you can
assist the International Business school to grow and also outlines
the benefit to you, the sponsor.
So far the response to the opportunity for companies
and individuals to join in a partnership with the lBS has been
most encouraging - a major player in the Island business community
has already made a major commitment and others are following suit.

Staff for the lBS
We shall be appointing full time staff in the
Spring of 2001 in order to teach our full time courses. However,
we require many people to contribute to our programmes on a less-than4ulltime
basis. Some people have already made contact with us in order
to offer us their services and we are very grateful to them for
doing this.
If you would like to be considered for membership
of our panel of part time staff then please send us a CV with
a note as to how you think that you would be able to contribute
to the development of the lBS.

A Venue for Conferences, Board Meetings, Seminars
etc
The Nunnery is not only a splendid venue for teaching
and research, it also offers an excellent location in which to
hold your Board Meetings - we shall have a rather fine Board Room
- and also conferences, seminars and "in-house" training
sessions.
If you want more information on these facilities
and the cost of hiring them please contact the Business Development
Manager, Joanne Griffin, on 01624 685794 or email j.gnffin©doe.gov.im

Needs analysis
We have promised to work closely with you to provide
the courses and training that you want. Joanne Griffin, our Business
Development Manager, is in the final stages of devising a questionnaire
that seeks to find out what courses, programme etc. you currently
support and what you believe your future needs to be.
We plan to send out the questionnaire in April/May
2000. Please respond to the questionnaire when it reaches you.
In the first instance it will go to companies in the International
finance sector. If you do not, for whatever reason, receive a
copy and wish to let us know what your needs are, do not hesitate
to contact us.
As part of our endeavours to ensure that we offer
the courses that you want we have been meeting with a range of
Government Departments, Finance sector companies and training
agencies to ensure that we are able to offer a coordinated pattern
of provision for people on the Isle of Man.
