A Home for the Business
School
After a protracted period of negotiation, the
International Business School now has a home! In the closing days
of 1999, a lease was exchanged that will enable the International
Business School to use the magnificent Nunnery Mansion House as
its base.
The Nunnery has been made available to the International
Business School by Mr Graham Ferguson Lacey who has been very
supportive of the project since its inception.
Before the lease could be signed, it was necessary
to gain a change in planning use and to meet the needs of local
by-laws. With all of those 'permissions' obtained, physical work
can now begin!
In order to satisfy the Fire Regulations and the
Health and Safety Regulations, contractors will shortly move into
The Nunnery in order to put in place fire retardant doors and
flooring material and to add to the number of toilets etc. These
are essential steps before we can actually use The Nunnery.
Also essential will be the installation of the
necessary cabling for electronics and voice links to be made.
As the lBS is to be a 'high tech' institution, it is vitally important
that we do this job thoroughly as well.
The Nunnery has been used extensively for filming
and as film sets and crews are not the most gentle people with
the interior decorations, we shall need to do some 'painting and
decorating' before our students can cross the threshold.
For you, our friends and supporters, we hope to
have an informal 'opening time' when you can come and look at
our new home before we get to work on it. The occasion will probably
be in late January. You will receive an invitation in due course
for what will, we hope, be an interesting social event.

Sponsorship
This is the time for you to consider very seriously
how to turn your support for the International Business School
from being expressions of goodwill into the sponsorship of tangible
activities. There will be opportunities to sponsor 'anything and
everything'. We shall be looking for sponsored accommodation -
seminar rooms, lecture theatres, a Board Room, the library -sponsored
studentsh ip , sponso red staff, internships, research, publishing
programmes, etc.
Even as you read this we are actively pricing
a range of options so that we can allow everyone to participate
in this prestigious development. So, several million pounds will
allow you to donate The Nunnery to the International Business
School, as little as £1000 per year would endow a travel scholarship.
The Director will be writing to your shortly with more information
on how you may contribute to the success of the International
Business School.

What Shall We Be Doing?
We need to start to 'earn our
living' as soon as possible. Some of the higher level courses
will therefore transfer from the Isle of Man College. We are currently
working with our colleagues at the College and in the professional
bodies to determine which courses and when they will move. We
are, of course, committed to the very high standards to which
students have become accustomed at the College and we shall ensure
that students are taught by the same staff and they will follow
the same syllabuses and receive the same awards.
What else shall we do? We need
~ to tell us what you want. We are in the unique position in British
Higher Education for the first time in over 50 years of having
a blank sheet of paper. The International Business School can
respond to your needs and requirements. We need your co-operation
and collaboration. The Isle of Man International Business School
cannot be, and does not want to be, an aloof 'ivory tower' institution.
Part of its mission is to reinforce the excellence that already
exists in the offshore industries on the Island. We can only do
this in partnership with the enterprises and organisations on
the Island. We shall shortly be conducting a 'Needs Analysis Survey'
which will give you the chance to tell us what your needs are
now and what you think they will be in the future.

Steering Group
The Steering Group that has brought
the International Business School from being a 'twinkle in someone's
eye' to being dynamic reality, held its last meeting on 1 St December.
This group of people have had the foresight, drive, enthusiasm,
tenacity and political 'savvy' to bring this Millennium project
'on stream and on time'. The Group has worked immensely hard and
has received support and encouragement from a wide and varied
range of people both on and off the Island. To all of these people
we, the new Business School team, and the people of the lsland
have a large debt of gratitude to pay. To you all, members of
the Steering Group, the people with whom they have consulted,
argued, co-operated and cajoled, a very big 'Thank You'!
Fortunately, we shall not lose the
services of all members of the Steering Group. The International
Business School has to establish a Board of Governors drawn from
various 'constituencies' and some of the Steering Group members
have been nominated to serve on the Board. This will give the
Business School an essential element of continuity as it moves
from the planning stage to becoming a real, live, high quality
Business School.
