Mysterious Murder at
the Nunnery

As the old adage goes ‘if these
walls could talk’ then we would be subject to
tales of horrific ghouls and vanishing spirits where
there is no day and only night, but that’s enough
about the International Business School students and
their drinking habits!
The current ‘Old Nunnery’
building dates from the 19th Century. However there
has been a building on this site since the time of
Robert the Bruce. Indeed the mighty Robbie stayed
at the Nunnery, and before he checked out with reception,
on his way to ransack Castle Rushen, commented on
the lack of bar facilities, an issue the Student Union
is attempting to redress!
The Nunnery has enjoyed a wide and
varied past; over the years its uses have included:
a private residence and a film location, and some
might say it is only natural that tales beyond the
crypt have arisen. However, it was as a private residence
that we find the most chilling accounts of strange
goings on.
Phantom figures walking down corridors,
terrified sleepers being woken up to find a shadowy
figure staring back. Haunted bathrooms where lights
flicker on and off by themselves, where locks mysteriously
‘un-lock’ and scratching is heard, as
if someone, or something is trying to escape. These
are only some of the accounts that have been mentioned
by previous occupants. In the garden tales of ghostly
squeaking, emanating from a wheel barrow are frequently
recalled, some have suggested that this sound is only
heard before someone dies, and so people believe the
gardener is in-fact, a grave digger off to prepare
another grave. Perhaps fortuitous, then that such
claim was recalled on Saturday night when the Nunnery
was home to the worst act of all MURDER!
On Saturday about 8.45 pm the Nunnery
(now home to the International Business School) was
the backdrop to an horrific murder. Indeed the terrible
act involved the Lord of the Manor being struck on
the head with a heavy blunt object, after enjoying
a Sauna.
In case you haven’t guessed yet, this was a
fictional murder, indeed it represented the first
in a series of Murder Mysteries, organised by the
Students Union.
Jamie Irving of the Students Union
said “Saturday was a fantastic night. It was
all about trial and error, it was mainly error and
we may be put on trial for our crimes against acting,
but it was a great night that was enjoyed by all.”
He also added that “Thanks must go the actors,
who are a truly talented group of people, and without
them Saturday would not have been possible; we would
also like to give a special thanks to Diane Brown
who helped us so much with the planning and preparation
for the evening”.
Final thanks from the Student Union
went to everyone who participated in the Murder Mystery
event, and whose support has cajoled the group into
organising future murders! Money raised from the event
will go towards Student Union funds.
