Students from the
Isle of Man International Business School
and London Metropolitan University
have recently returned from a study visit
to the US. Students are taking the Masters
degree in Financial Regulation and Compliance
Management which is accredited by London
Met. A unique component of the degree is
the five day study visit which facilitates
learning about American financial regulation
and compliance. The US visit also allowed
students to contrast their understanding
of regulatory systems learnt during their
first year European study trip.
The students undertook an intensive programme
of meetings with US regulators and industry
practitioners building upon the theoretical
aspects of the degree programme, in particular
the Comparative and International Financial
Regulation unit.
The group met with
representatives from the Federal Reserve
Bank, the Commodity Futures
Trading Commission, the Securities and Exchange
Commission and the International Monetary
Fund. The Washington D.C. meetings covered
the US regulatory structure, current issues
in banking and securities regulation and
international regulatory cooperation and
developments. In addition the students also
received briefings on current issues in international
tax reforms at the Heritage Foundation and
a practitioner’s view of US regulation
at Edward Jones stockbrokers in St Louis.
The visit was not only
practical but also formed an essential
part of the degree designed
to equip the compliance professional with
an in-depth knowledge of the regulatory system.
The group learnt about the relatively complex
system of Federal and State regulation and
the agencies tasked with the supervision
of the financial services industry. The study
visit was a great success and complimented
the students’ studies by providing
an insight into the practical aspects and
issue of regulation. The students received
a warm reception from the Americans in contrast
to the heavy snow and freezing winter temperatures
of Washington D.C. and St Louis.
