Undergraduate Work Placement Programme

The International Business School has announced its first Work Placement Programme for BA (Hons) Business Studies undergraduates.

Ian Moncrief-Scott, IBS Placements Officer, explains, "The Programme offers local employers a unique opportunity to secure a bright, enthusiastic, business-focussed undergraduate for that special project, challenge and potential recruitment."

Placements are due to commence between June and August 2003 and are available to local industrial, commercial and government organisations on a one-year fixed term contract, during the third 'sandwich' year of a student's degree study.

Ian Moncrief-Scott adds, "Most of the current students have Manx connections and with the Island having already invested heavily in their future, I believe that local employers will be eager to mature their valuable talent.

A recent survey conducted under the auspices of the Isle of Man Careers Service dispelled the myth that most students want to leave the Island for either further education or future employment.  Each time a graduate or undergraduate departs, we risk squandering our educational investment, disrupting our social climate and providing off-Island competitors with expertise.  This Programme presents an attractive structure to underpin and bolster theoretical knowledge with practical experience leading to employment, here in the Island."

As a foundation for placement, each student must undertake a formal Preparation for Work Module, induction training, as well as learning project management, time management, report writing and presentation techniques.

During assignment, the Business School will work closely with employers and students to maximise progress and performance. Students are required to build a Portfolio of Evidence with Monthly Learning Logs to demonstrate and assess their development and leaning needs.

Employers may choose suitable roles at their discretion. These could typically involve Marketing, Business Planning, Compliance, Retail Management, Research, IT/Systems Analysis or Procurement.
