IBS Principal Lecturer Teaches Geography to Accountants in Jersey

Dr Ven Tauringana, Principal Lecturer at the Isle of Man International Business School presented a paper entitled 'The Influence of Selected Company Variables on Narrative Discussion of the Statutory Accounts' to the Annual British Accounting Association Conference held at the Hotel de France, St. Helier, Jersey from the 3 to 5 April.

The conference sponsored by ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA, ICAEW and ICAS was mainly for academic accountants but was also attended by a number of practitioners. Dr Tauringana said, 'My paper was very well received judging by the number of participants who came to talk to me following the presentation'. He was particularly encouraged by the fact that many delegates, among them professors from well-known universities from as far as Australia, expressed an interest in collaborating with him on his research.

Dr Tauringana is the first member of academic staff to represent the Isle of Man International Business School at an international conference and in doing so, he has started to raise awareness in academic circles, not only of the International Business School - but also of the Isle of Man. Dr Tauringana said, 'Most of the international delegates didn't even know the location of the Isle of Man. One popular misconception was that Isle of Man is located in the Caribbean!' Given that so many delegates, some from Europe, did not know where the Isle of Man is, Dr Tauringana is taking no chances when he presents another paper on interim reporting to the European Accounting Association Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark later this month. He says that 'I will be taking the map and flying the flag of Isle of Man next time'. That way he hopes academic accountants at the conference will go away knowing more than just how to 'balance the books'.
