On Monday 10th September a new era opened for the Isle of Man when the first students enrolled for the BA Business Studies programme at the International Business School.

This event marked the culmination of the plans to create a dedicated Higher Education establishment on the Isle of Man. It brought to fruition a dream that has been held by many farsighted Manx Men and Women over the years - to provide opportunities for island residents to access degree level programmes in Business and Finance.

Some of these people were present to welcome the students on their first day. Dr Edgar Mann, Ralph Thomas, Steve Rodan the Minister for Education and Ralph Cowin the Director of Education all wished the students every success in their future study.

Those who are working, those wishing to take advantage of the opportunity for Higher Education that they missed as school leavers, those who simply want to stay on island to read for their first degree - all of these people are represented in the first cohort of BA Business Studies students.

During their first, induction week as undergraduate students they have been getting to know each other and the staff of the IBS, and have also been engaged in a "Business Start-up Game" to give them a flavour of the subjects that they will cover in their studies. The student groups chose to establish a night club, develop an organic health drink, a video delivery service and an exclusive brand of polo shirts!

Next week will see a second group of new students begin their studies at the International Business School. The MSc in International Banking and Finance students will begin a two year part-time programme. And they will be followed in November by students taking the MSc Financial Regulation and Compliance Management programme. And in the New Year the final new course in this academic year of the International Business School will slot into place when the MBA programme begins.

Commenting on the enrolment of the new students, the Director of the International Business School, Prof. Roger Carey, said, "This is a red letter day for the IBS and for the Isle of Man. Students now have options to access Higher Education that did not exist before. We are now fulfilling one of the main purposes for which the IBS was established - to create choice for students and to give them the option of studying in their own homeland, surrounded by family and friends. The students that have enrolled today are pioneers - where they are leading many others will now be able to follow".
