About the Isle of Man

  • The Isle of Man’s education system is first rate. Its results consistently outperform the UK, building the necessary skills for 21st Century success. 97.8% of Manx secondary students pass their GCSEs (with 16.4% of passes at A* or A) and over 75% of pupils achieve an IT qualification.

  • Quality of life on the Isle of Man is high – with little commuting, low personal taxes, very low crime and a lively arts and cultural scene. In 2002 it achieved the highest rating ever polled by MORI for its quality of life.

  • Centrally located within the British Isles, with a low population density of 134 people per square kilometre (compared to 23,660 in Monaco and 766 in the Channel Isles), the Isle of Man offers plenty of room to breath.

  • The Isle of Man is a land of outstanding natural beauty. The dramatic scenery spanning majestic mountains and enchanting glens, invigorates the senses and provides an inspirational space to think.

  • With our countryside and leisure facilities within 5 minutes of the main work areas, the Isle of Man can offer you an extra hour of leisure per day – providing opportunities for you to enjoy our environment and spend time with your friends and family.

  • The Isle of Man has a successful and diverse economy – 90% of supported new business start-ups succeed and its economy is growing at three times the rate in Europe.

  • Effective public/private sector co-operation has led to a first rate business environment with world class telecom and broadband, business support systems, grants and zero rate corporate tax.

  • There is full employment on the Island across a diverse range of industries including the largest sector - finance, as well as shipping, engineering, e-commerce, tourism, agriculture and film-making.  (Work placements are readily available as part of our BA (Hons) Business Studies degree programme for both local and international students.)

  • The Isle of Man financial services industry, started from scratch around 30 years ago, has won major awards year after year. For example, it’s been “Best International Financial Services Centre” in each of the past 6 years.

  • The Government of this independent nation, is agile and responsive, able to meet the needs of both business and local communities by creating effective new legislation, cutting red tape and reducing bureaucracy.   • Tynwald is the oldest uninterrupted parliament in the world and was founded by the Vikings around 979AD.

  • In 1881 the Isle of Man was the first country in the world to give women the vote and in 2006 it was the first country in Europe to give 16 year olds the vote.

  • The Isle of Man has a heritage of originality spanning centuries. That is why there is not only a vibrant arts scene but also successful new sectors such as shipping, movie-making, aerospace services and e-business.

  • Our communities regularly work together to ensure we give our best, be it in charity fundraising and volunteer programmes; performing in, creating and staging award winning concerts and productions; or participating in, organising, excelling at and winning world class sporting events.

  • The Isle of Man gave the world’s its largest water wheel and first oil tanker, the celebrated designer Archibald Knox, the Bee Gees and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
