Work Placement Programme

Keeall Chionnit liorish Kiartaghyn

About the Programme

Our Work Placement Programme (or Work-Based Learning Programme) enables students in the penultimate year of our BA (Hons) Business Studies programme (BABS) to gain ‘real-world’, paid work experience within the structure of a ‘sandwich’ degree course.

(International students on our MSc International Banking and Finance and Executive MBA programmes also have the option to undertake a work placement of 3 months duration.)

The Benefits of Work Placements

By undertaking a 48-week, fixed term employment contract with a leading employer (June-September), our BABS students can explore their career options, gain practical experience and skills for their CV, and top up their bank balance!

After their work placement, all final year BABS students are required to research a major project and present this as a dissertation. Since dissertations should centre on a real work problem, this makes our work placements an invaluable learning and networking experience both for our students and their employers.

What’s more, our placement students frequently gain part-time work with their host organisations during the final year of their studies and full-time employment upon completion of their course too.

…all of which explains why Business Studies is the most popular degree programme delivered at the Isle of Man International Business School.

Before the Work Placement

Prior to their placement, all students undertake a ‘Preparation for Work’ module, delivered by Ian Moncrief-Scott, including induction training and counselling on the preparation of CVs and application forms. Other skills taught include project management, time management, report writing and presentation techniques.

After consultation with individual students, all placements are facilitated by Ian Moncrief-Scott, our Work Placement Officer. Ian ensures that all placement positions present our students with real opportunities for academic, social and practical learning; whilst also providing an appropriate contribution to their employing organisation.

Our students offer potential employers:

  • Knowledge and understanding of business and finance
  • Word processing and IT experience
  • Research and problem-solving skills
  • Specialist and general business skills
  • Teamworking, communication and presentation skills
  • Commitment, enthusiasm and motivation

The Work Placement

All work placement students are given real and relevant jobs to do and paid very competitive salaries (£14,000 to £25,000) including paid holidays. During their placement, students are treated as normal members of staff, given appropriate responsibility, and trained in company procedures and important issues such as Health and Safety.

Our work placement students typically undertake business-related roles such as:

Role Main Responsibilities

Business Planning Analyst

Compiling and analysing revenue statistics, demand forecasts and budgets and preparing strategic plans.

Finance Assistant

Producing weekly and monthly financial reports, financial analysis of business projects and data presentation.

Work-Based Learning – PLUS! an additional qualification

Students receive their Certificates of Licentiateship, July 2007
Students receive their Certificates of Licentiateship, July 2007

To ensure that our placement students really do benefit from ‘work-based learning’, they receive at least two supervisory visits from a Business School tutor; attend a one-day ‘Mid-Placement Conference’ to share their ideas and progress; keep monthly ‘learning logs’; and collate a ‘portfolio of evidence’ of their learning on completion of their placement.

Since The IBS was accredited in 2005 as a delegated authority to register and assess candidates for the award of the Certificate of Licentiateship of the City and Guilds of London Institute (LCGI), students who submit a high-standard portfolio can also earn themselves an additional qualification by submitting their portfolio for assessment against the benchmarks required by the Licentiateship.

Students receive their Certificates of Licentiateship, Sept 2006

The City and Guilds of London Institute is an awarding body offering qualifications in a wide range of vocational subjects. An internationally-recognised qualification, the LCGI demonstrates that a student has achieved high levels of competence in their work placement. Since the Institute is a chartered institution, our graduates who also hold the Licentiateship are entitled to add the designatory postnominal letters BA (Hons) and LCGI after their name.
